WILLIAMSTOWN - BAROSSA VALLEY

95 points - Mike Bennie, HWC :
From vines planted in 1972, located in the southern realms of the Barossa Valley, not far off Adelaide Hills. Wild fermented. A beautiful, pure, soft red wine of medium-bodied weight, succulent tannins, pleasing, woody spice and distinct black plum, blackcurrant and black olive fruit character. While quite meaty and warm overall, the wine finds good shape from the rivulets of silty tannin and bolstering from an almost amaro-herb-laced acid profile. It swishes around the palate beautifully, silken and somewhat rich but with elevated, pure-feeling freshness underlying. Modern Barossa, perhaps, but classic enough, too. Stellar.”

Old Vine Shiraz
Planted in 1972, these vines are officially classified as Barossa Old Vines under the charter rules. That classification is for vines 35 years or older – “Their worthiness has been proven over many vintages, consistently producing the highest quality fruit for Barossa Wines of distinction and longevity”.

The Wine
Organically grown and made. This wine is a playful journey as it opens in the glass. Every sip offers more! Just as you think you put your finger on a flavour, a new flavour or aroma appears. Meaty and spicy at first, it opens to dense dark berries, and cardamom. This evolves into an orange peel white pepper moment. The mouthfeel is velvety, charred with dark chocolate-coated oranges. The tannins are layered elegant and rich.
Alc 14.5%. Drink now or carefully cellar to 2033+. Suggested serving temperature 15-17C.

The Winemaking
Made by Candice and Frew at the CRFT winery in Carey Gully. Hand-picked on the 28th March 2023. Destemmed to an open-top tank for wild fermentation with 11 days on skins. Pressed to barrel with a few Baumé of sugar, a couple weeks of barrel fermentation following. Full wild malolactic fermentation. 10 months in oak with occasional lees stirring. 100% French oak, 20% new. Bottled Feb 2024. Vegan friendly.

The Vineyard
Situated on the corner of Wild Street and South Terrace on the slopes of Williamstown, the Wild South Vineyard is a very Australian scene. The old gum trees, rolling hills and the craggy bushland of the neighbouring Hale Conservation Park make you feel like one of McCloud’s Daughters are going to canter over the hill… on a brumby.

Formerly the ‘Rohrlach Vineyard’ and now named ‘Wild South Vineyard’, the property is situated on the southern fringe of the Barossa Valley wine region, a couple kilometers from the boundary of the Adelaide Hills wine region

Since 2021 the Rohrlach family have converted to organic and regenerative farming practices. The vineyard was Certified ‘In-Conversion’ in 2024 and with full certification in 2025 vintage.
