SOLD OUT - CRFT 2022 Grüner Veltliner – The Mt Bera Vineyard (organic)

CUDLEE CREEK – ADELAIDE HILLS

The Wine
This is our first release from the organically-farmed Mt Bera Vineyard at Cudlee Creek. The vineyard is currently in the organic conversion phase which comes before receiving full organic certification.
2022 was a challenging season at Mt Bera. The vineyard was hit by hail resulting in tiny yields, and because of this, we have an extremely limited 2022 release.

The nose shows citrus blossom, apple, peach and earthy parsnip. The palate has marmalade, pepper and fennel seed, it’s almost oily with a mouth-coating tannins.

Organically grown and made (uncertified)

Drink 2022 to 2030, possibly beyond.
Serving temp 9-11℃, cooler in warm weather.
Alcohol - 13.5% alc/vol
Vegan Friendly

Winemaking

Mt Bera Vineyard
Vineyard: Owned and farmed by Greg Horner.
Location: Cudlee Creek - Peramangk Country – Adelaide Hills
Elevation: 380 to 410 metres
Aspect: North North West

Clone: Iby, HHW1, HHW2
Map: -34.844650, 138.847464
Soil: Rich deep red clay loam soil high in iron, magnesium and manganese.

The Mt Bera Gruner vineyard has a three-sided cold-catchment with only drainage down to the Karrawirra Parri (Torrens) Gorge. This provides unique conditions producing a huge diurnal variation of 15-20C. These conditions favour notes of pepper and spice and higher natural acidity.

SOLD OUT - CRFT 2022 Grüner Veltliner – The K1 Vineyard

KUITPO – ADELAIDE HILLS

The Wine
The 10th release of our Kuitpo Grüner and our winemaking style has evolved over the past decade. In the early days we fermented in stainless steel tanks using commercial yeast, without solids, malo or oak. Now we wild ferment in tank and oak, leave wild MLF to take its own path and tinker less – it’s the textural style of Grüner that we love.

A nose of citrus and floral notes with honeydew melon and peach. The palate is textural with fine acid, white pepper, lime and pear.

Serving temp 9-11℃, cooler in warm weather.

SOLD OUT - CRFT 2022 Grüner Veltliner – The Arranmore Vineyard (NASAA Certified Organic)

CAREY GULLY – PICCADILLY VALLEY – ADELAIDE HILLS

The Wine
With only 8 rows of Grüner planted at our place, each vintage is produced in a very limited amount. The cold 2021 Spring caused late and extended flowering into December. This together with windy conditions resulted in hen and chicken throughout the crop, reducing the overall yield for 2022.

The nose has honeysuckle, white peach, white pear and bee’s wax. The palate shows wet slate minerality, nutmeg, textural layers and a nougat finish.

Reviews and Scores
92 POINTS - CAMPBELL MATTINSON, THE WINE FRONT
”Intensity is good. Texture is interesting too: not so much plush, which is the usual synonym for texture in wine, but chalky and dry through the finish, almost steely, though with tropical fruit, apple and ribald spice flavours rolling straight on through. This is another hit with Gruner for the CRFT team.”

The Wine
Classic flavours with celery, white pepper and kiwi fruit. It hints at umami and grilled cheese with plenty of pear and a textural mid palate.
Drinking beautifully at release and will continue to develop with bottle age.

95 POINTS - HUON HOOKE (THE REAL REVIEW)

One of 3 Grüners in the CRFT collection, somewhat tropical in its aromatics, though with telling varietal white pepper notes. Plenty of mixed spice in there as well, seasoning the ripe fruit flavours within - suggestions of mango and peach, with lovely sticky tannins in the finish. Most distinctive.”

A style shift for 2020, this release bringing a richer and more complex style. Mango, peach and apricot, with ripe white pear and black pepper. Hugely textural and concentrated, gorgeous star anise spice lift on the palate with a mangosteen and apricot finish.

Reviews and Scores

94 POINTS - FALSTAFF INTERNATIONAL GRÜNER GOES GLOBAL FEATURE SPRING 2022
”Moss, asparagus, green bell pepper and indeed white pepper spice make for a totally enticing nose. The palate is wonderfully concentrated and has a lovely, pithy, phenolic edge as well as lime zest spikiness. This is quite a little pleasure bomb - just made to enliven simply everything. What energy!”

92 POINTS - CAMPBELL MATTINSON, THE WINE FRONT
”Arguably the most textural of CRFT’s three Gruner releases from 2021. This has some serious grip. Apple skins, yeast, cider-like notes, pepper spice and more. It’s a super-dry style with good intensity and length. It’ll be interesting to see where this one goes. Personality plus. Drink 2022-2026.”

The Wine

Perfumed with floral notes of rose petal and blossoms then fresh ripe stone fruit. Classic Gruner flavours of canned peach, fresh dill, and a rich and creamy mouthfeel.

This Macclesfield district variation has subtle green pear notes to begin. There's a wave of tempered minerally acidity as you first sip, more earthy than the others, with lemon/lime elements on the palate. It finishes with mouthfilling texture and complex lingering flavours and textures. Well realised.”

The Wine

Reviews and Scores

91 POINTS - MIKE BENNIE, THE WINE FRONT
”CRFT, they who dislike vowels, are somewhat of a gruner specialist, though I’m not pigeonholing, they just seem to do really well with it and do a lot more than most with it.
True to ‘classic gruner’, if that’s a thing, this is very well expressed in this wine with root vegetable scents and flavours, tonic water and lime characters, a ripple of limey acidity, just under medium weight, good texture, excellent length. Lots of charm and interest.”

The Wine

The nose shows pineapple, a subtle flinty note, then layers of white peach with white pepper spice. The palate has the most minerality of the three Grüners, with a direct acid line and fresh nectarine finish.

Review

94 POINTS - TONY LOVE (HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION)

One of 3 Grüners from this creative Hills couple. 50% whole-bunch pressed with 2 days skin contact, wild fermentation and lees influence. Swelling with white peach and pear, the texture verging on an oiliness, though cut with lines of Meyer lemon and gentle, finishing acidity. Quite delicious, and a definite statement.”

The Wine

2020 was a great vintage for textural whites! Lifted with white pear, notes of wet slate and warm spice. Plenty of grapefruit, lime leaf and citrus, with hints of celery and pepper. Textural and spicy at first with a round almost oily mouthfeel, all balanced by lengthy acidity and a white nectarine finish.
